US Felt Fabric Puzzle (FREE Template)

A while back, the dollar section at Target had a United States map made out of felt.  After purchasing that, I decided to make a felt puzzle out of the different states.  So today, I’m sharing the templates with you so that you can create you own!

Materials:

  • Yellow Felt (2 sheets)
  • Red Felt (2 sheets)
  • Green Felt (2 sheets)
  • Blue Felt (2 sheets)
  • Orange Felt (2 sheets)
  • Light Blue Felt (1 sheet)
  • Scissors
  • Black Fabric Paint
  • Toothpick
  • State templates (free download here: States)
  • State Abbreviations (free download here: State Abbreviations)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Fabric pins

Instructions:

  1. Print out the templates (making sure to reset your margins to ensure that it prints out correctly).
  2. Place the templates with their corresponding felt sheets (yellow states go on yellow felt), and pin them down on the felt with fabric pins (place a pin or two on each state to ensure they stay put).
  3. Cut out each state, leaving them template sheet pinned on top to ensure you remember the proper position and the name of each state.  (side-note, Hawaii and Alaska will have two steps: 1. Cut the inside of Alaska out of yellow, and then cut the outside of Alaska out of light blue. 2. Use hot glue to attach the yellow on top of the blue in its proper position.  3. Cut the inside of Hawaii out of red, and then cut the outside of Hawaii out of light blue.  4. Use hot glue to attach the red on top of the light blue in it’s proper position.)
  4. Once ever thing is cut (and Hawaii and Alaska glued), you can print off the state’s abbreviation sheet and get the fabric paint and toothpick ready.
  5. For each piece, take the pins off of the felt and find the proper abbreviation for that state.  Paint the abbreviation, using the toothpick as your paintbrush.  Let them dry for at least 30 minutes.

Now, it’s perfectly ok if you don’t have the map.  You could make one of your own by taking a large sheet of felt and drawing the outlines of the states with permanent marker and then fabric paint.  Otherwise, you can use this link to see where each state goes!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this free template!   If you are in love with felt as much as I am, don’t forget to check out my Etsy shop.  There are other templates and felt food on there that are wonderful for young children to play with and learn about!
